John Goode
Yes, the John Goode !
We are extremely fortunate to have John visit and talk to us.
John is the founding Editor of ‘Sailing Today’ and principal of the Southern Sailing School.
At sea since the age of twelve he is a Master Mariner, Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation and a Senior RYA Examiner.

Post meeting report.
John came armed with his wealth of knowledge, raconteurial skills and his violin !
Fortunately, we heard more from his experiences than we did from his violin !
From his early days in tramp steamers on the River Plate to the South China Sea where he first met his friend Robin Knox -Johnston and on to the street of a thousand armpits, where ever it was, John had a story to tell.
We learned some essential sea faring skills such as, how to convey a full mug of hot tea from the galley to the skipper on the bridge, how to double shot a cannon and why it is that sailors smoke pipes.
His, and Robin Knox-Johnston’s contribution to the Trafalgar Day celebrations at Portsmouth was graphically retold.
John identified with the ordinary sailor in his audience and is a tireless campaigner for the freedom and enjoyment of the sea without the hand of officialdom interfering.
John’s talk was highly entertaining and much enjoyed by the record turnout of members and we are extremely grateful to John for giving his time, particularly as he had to leave immediately after to finalise the next edition of ‘Sailing Today’ ready for press which he and his team finished at 02.00 hours Friday !
Newbury Yacht Club’s 2007/2008 Winter Programme is already taking shape with more promise of sea related entertainment on offer.

Back by popular demand is the 50/50 auction fronted by our own ‘Flog It’ presenter, our esteemed Treasurer, John Milton.
John has many talents, one of which is the ability to extract money from anyone within a twenty yard radius with painless ease.
So get rummaging and dig out all those boating items that you thought you might keep ‘just in case’ and let John flog them for you (for a small fee of course, well 50% actually)
