Our Rear Commodore Offshore comes up trumps yet again with brilliant
sunshine to bathe the nine yachts and twenty three people congregated on the new Dan Bran pontoon.

Commodore Peter and Chris entertained on Aurora with Cream Teas followed
later by a pre dinner Pimms on Smartie with Martin and Sheila.

The Pimms was prepared by Mike and Iris Goodman to their own secret recipe, although a bottle of export strength gin was spotted lingering amongst the ingredients.

Fitting Out Supper – 10th May 2007

On a wet and wild Thursday evening Newbury Yacht Club members embarked on a voyage with a difference. Not the vast expanse of the Solent or English Channel but the confines of the Kennet and Avon Canal at Hungerford on The Rose. To say it was lashing it down would be an understatement but our intrepid members soon ensconced themselves into the cosy confines of the narrow boat. Members, Tom & Karen Sperry, Mike & Rosina Dickens, Dan & Norma Kilty & friend Kevin were our crew braving the elements and making us most welcome.

This was a popular event but numbers were restricted so it was first come first served and the lucky fifty were rewarded with a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

We experienced odd bumps as we progressed through the locks but soon settled down and darkness drew upon us. As we approached the end of our outbound leg there was an almighty bang at the fora’d end bringing us to an abrupt halt. However, The Rose is a robust girl and she took what turned out to be a submerged fallen tree in her stride.

On board drinks flowed smoothly and appetites were ready to receive the fish and chip suppers which duly came aboard in boxes swiftly handed for’ard by Vice Commodore Karen.

With hungers satisfied we moved on to the exciting business of the raffle for which members had contributed over twenty five prizes. Karen had earlier extracted over £125 for an array of goodies and she made smart work of running through the draw with not a second lost.

We were privileged to have the company of John Cuthberson, a founding member of the club. John had travelled by taxi from Stoney Stratford to attend the supper and he reacquainted himself with many members. John told me that he sold up to move to the south coast of France, sailing through the French canals to get there. We all have our adventures to tell and John was no exception.

Back at Hungerford we disembarked with the rain easing and couldn’t believe it was nearly four hours since we had left.

Fitting Out Supper

This year the Fitting Out Supper is to be on the water – not seawater granted but water nevertheless! We are booked on the 55 ft. Rose of Hungerford motor barge for a gentle cruise from Hungerford Wharf in the town centre in a westerly direction through four locks and two swing bridges to Froxfield Wharf . This trip takes in beautiful views of the Parish Church , Hungerford Marsh and pleasant, remote tree-lined stretches of the canal.

The boat will be leaving Hungerford Wharf at 7.30 p.m., if there is likely to be a problem on the evening, please let me know on my mobile 07776 147710 as soon as possible.

There is a well stocked bar on board, also freshly made tea and coffee is available. The boat is covered and heated for all weather cruising and is based at the old and picturesque Canal Wharf , just off Bridge Street in Hungerford town centre.

I have organised fish and chips to be delivered to the boat at Froxfield at approximately 9.00 – 9.30 p.m.

There will be the usual raffle on board, all proceeds going towards Club funds and I hope we can rely on your usual generosity to provide raffle prizes please.

The Rose of Hungerford returns to Hungerford Wharf at approximately 10.30 p.m. and as it only accommodates 50 people, I’m afraid we have to operate on a first come, first served basis.

The cost of the trip is £12.50 to include the fish and chips. If you wish to attend this evening, please let me know as soon as possible and definitely by Tuesday 1 st May.

Waterborne Activity Events – 2007

Royal Lymington Yacht Club
Saturday 8th September

You are cordially invited by Newbury Yacht Club to join us for dinner at Royal Lymington Yacht Club on Saturday 8th September. Sadly this is the last water borne meet of the year.

The Yacht Club is located approximately half way between the Yacht Haven marina on the seaward side and Berthon marina further up the river on the western shore of the river. The Yacht Club is situated right by the side of the public slipway and has commanding views of the river and the Western Solent.

We will be eating in their River Bar area to meet at 7.30 pm in the bar, to be seated at 8.00pm. Dress code for the evening is smart casual. As always we would welcome members by car and for the skippers we have reserved berths on the Dan Bran pontoon which is the relatively new pontoon just to the seaward side of the club the other side of the slipway. Mooring charges to be paid separately.

We are to be served with a choice of the following:

Pork Liver Pate with redcurrant jelly, served with hot toast
Mushroom Soup
Smoked Salmon and Prawns with garnish

Quarter shoulder of slow roasted Lamb with mint and redcurrant sauce
Smoked Haddock Mornay
Sirolin of Beef with Yorkshire pudding
All served with seasonal vegetables and choice of potatoes

Strawberries and cream
Profiteroles
Chocolate and Hazelnut roulade

Coffee and Mints

The cost is £21.50 per person and I would be grateful if you could fill in the form with your choice of menu and return to me with your cheque made payable to Newbury Yacht Club. Choice of vegetarian options are available on the night.

Our Commodore and his wife, Peter and Chris, have kindly offered to host afternoon tea from 1515 hours on board Aurora and I am hoping that, weather permitting, we shall be able to have ‘Pimms on the Pontoon’ before we go to the Yacht Club.

Spring Rally

Saturday 5th May

You are cordially invited to join us on our first waterborne event at Chichester on Bank Holiday Saturday. Berthing reservations will be made in Chichester Marina and we will be dining in the new Quarterdeck area in Chichester Yacht club where we will be served a hot fork buffet as follows:

Lamb Madras with rice, condiments and poppadoms

Steak & Ale Pie with potatoes and vegetables

Vegetarian option available.

Choice of desserts.

Coffee available at machine.

The cost of the evening will be £21.50 which does not cover your berthing fee.

Chichester Marina is accessed through a lock and that entry is not advised 2 hours either side of low water. I personally favour entry and exit during freeflow which is between the hours of 1247 – 1607 on Saturday and 1320 – 1630 on Sunday and operated by a traffic light system. Chichester Marina would like all members to tie up on the waiting pontoon prior to entry into the lock and there you have direct entry to the marina office. They will give you your berthing number and a plan of the marina. Entry into the marina is straight forward, however I would suggest that all skippers consult their Almanacs prior to entry.

Weather permitting we will be offering drinks and nibbles on the pontoon from 6.30pm , location to be advised.

As we are not departing until early Sunday afternoon I am hoping to entice members to take a morning stroll up the banks of the Estuary to Dell Quay.

If there are members that do not have a boat of their own and are possibly interested in chartering with others for the weekend then would they please get in touch with Tom Rossiter @ rossitertw@penningtons.co.uk or telephone 01635 38310 who is coordinating enquiries. It is worth reminding you that even if this does not appeal then members are still most welcome by whatever form of transport they choose.

As this Meet is on a Bank Holiday weekend I have not organised anything formally for the Sunday evening but, weather permitting, I had thought that if members would like to organise their own food, we could have a mass cook-in on the beach at East Head where we will supply the barbecue.

I would be pleased if you return your reply to me by the 25th April with a cheque made payable to Newbury Yacht Club .
